Home Inventions

There is a small but strong community of vintage car devotees in New Zealand. They spend large amounts of their spare time stripping, recycling, and re-inventing disused vehicles. They exhibit their works with pride at beach hops and car shows.

While visiting a small town in the South Island, a local man invited me to view a private workshop housed on his property. Inside the workshop was an array of salvaged classic cars and half-finished restoration projects. He was stripping some of these cars, he said, to build his own prototype vehicle.

The Swiss box cutter rides on wheels

"Voltitude" is an electric motorbike inspired by the famous Swiss boxcutter: batteries and electronics are enclosed into the central part of the typical red and white flag frame. Saddle, handlebars and front wheel fold back on themselves and Voltitude slips into a small bag to be taken anywhere. In order not to spoil the design of the means the pedals are transparent, made with a special plastic material.

Virtual Travels

Technology is becoming a big obsession for many people and some choose to socialize over the internet more than they do in real life. It is only natural that virtual transportation interests these types of addicts, who can see the world without leaving their computer screen. Many Second Life gamers are now willing to spend cash on "in-game" cars! General Motors' Pontiac division is spending thousands of dollars to create a make-believe dealership that will sell make-believe cars for as little as a few dollars a piece in the virtual world.

honda dreams

'honda dreams' shows motorcycle culture on the streets of Hanoi, Viet Nam. The popularity of the motorcycle in Viet Nam is legendary and possibly unsurpassed in the world. Considering that the combined population of Viet Nam’s main cities, HCMC and Hanoi, is around 12 million people, it is astonishing that the inhabitants of those two cities own a total of 8 million motorcycles - most of them Hondas. In fact, Honda motorbikes are so ubiquitous in Viet Nam, the brand name is widely used as a synonym for motorcycles in general.
