Fishy Stuff

Fishy Stuff Improvised Aquarium. Here at Color Mechanics Headquarters in London, we came up with the idea of improvising our very own aquarium to go with the quarterly issue of Colors about the Sea. London is quite far from the coast, so we had an epiphany when we saw a set of cuddly toys shaped as fishes. We thought it would be cool to paint each of them differently giving them a sort of personality as well as creating different species with diverse colors and expressions. We then took them to our nearest next-best-thing from the sea: our local park, which houses a small lake.

The Salton Sea, California's first climate victim

A desert landscape; abandoned crumbling hotels; dry swimming pools; dead palm trees; a salty lake with white salt-crusted beaches and dead fish. Welcome to the Salton Sea, an apocalyptic place in the forgotten southeast corner of California. The Salton Sea is one of the first victims of climate change. When choices have to be made about where to send the reduced quantities of water some win, some lose.

The seas flavor

I grew up swimming in the pacific ocean every summer in Peru. Over there, the sunny days starts with a ceviche, a spicy and refreshing fish dish. Every family has its own secrets for prepared it, they use different kinf of "aji" -chilli peppers-, purple onion, lemon juice and fresh fish. But for me, the real secret is that a ceviche will make you travel back to the happy summers of your childhood wherever you are.

Morning in Key West

It's gotta be the sea or the mountain. Everything in between pales and lacks and fades.

the sea is... wondrous

The sea holds many facets of wonder for me: from the survival strategies of mutually symbiotic relationships such as that between the clownfish and anemone, to the evolution of successful camouflage.

Robotic Fish

Small soup-can sized information gathering robots are set to swarm the oceans. Created by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography with US$2.5 million dollars in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the autonomous underwater explorers (AUEs) will help provide information on everything from small ocean-dwelling organisms to the oceans’ currents.
